Visby, the medieval jewel of Gotland island, is incredibly safe. The walled historic center is pedestrianized, calm, and very secure for travelers of all kinds. During the summer, the town experiences a massive influx of domestic tourists, which can make accommodation and restaurants crowded, but crime remains negligible. If you rent a bicycle to explore the surrounding coastline, be mindful of the local winds, which can be surprisingly strong. Sweden's 'Allemansrätten' (Right of Public Access) allows you to roam freely in nature, but this also entails a responsibility to keep the environment pristine and respect local wildlife—do not disturb nesting birds or farm animals.
