Uppsala is one of Sweden's oldest and most prestigious university cities. It is a very safe, pleasant, and highly intellectual destination with a very low crime rate. The historic cathedral, the castle, and the banks of the River Fyris are secure to visit day and night. Like many Swedish cities, the main traffic hazard is the overwhelming number of bicycles; cyclists dominate the roads and often move very quickly, so stay off the red bike paths. While the city is very quiet and peaceful, the area around the university can get quite lively with student celebrations in late spring, but this is always good-natured and does not pose a threat to tourists.
