Kiruna, located deep in the Swedish Arctic, is the gateway to the Icehotel and world-class Northern Lights viewing. It is an extremely safe, quiet town with virtually no crime. The hazards here are entirely environmental. The extreme sub-zero temperatures in winter (often dropping below -30°C) pose a genuine risk of frostbite and hypothermia; professional-grade thermal layers and windproof clothing are mandatory. When chasing the Northern Lights, only use registered tour operators, as getting lost or stuck in the wilderness during the long dark winter nights is life-threatening. If you are driving a rental car, ensure it is equipped with winter tires and know that the roads can be pure sheets of ice.
