Pretoria is South Africa's administrative capital. While it is quieter than neighboring Johannesburg, it shares many of the same security challenges. Affluent eastern suburbs like Brooklyn, Waterkloof, and the area around the Union Buildings are relatively safe to visit during daylight hours. However, the city center and the Sunnyside neighborhood struggle with high rates of violent crime, muggings, and drug-related issues; these areas should be avoided by tourists. If traveling between Pretoria and O.R. Tambo International Airport, the Gautrain is the safest, most reliable option. When driving, keep doors locked to prevent smash-and-grabs, especially at highway off-ramps.
