The main tourist strip, the Golden Mile beachfront, has a strong police presence and is generally safe for daytime walking, surfing, and cycling. However, the nearby CBD can be gritty and is best avoided by tourists. Muggings and pickpocketing are significant risks; never leave belongings unattended on the beach and do not walk along the beachfront after dark. Ocean safety is paramount: the Indian Ocean here has powerful, dangerous rip currents. Swim only at beaches protected by shark nets and actively patrolled by lifeguards.
