Port Elizabeth, recently renamed Gqeberha, is a major coastal hub and the gateway to the famous Garden Route and malaria-free Eastern Cape safari reserves. It is generally considered safer and more relaxed than Johannesburg or Durban, but visitors must not become complacent. Beachfront suburbs like Summerstrand are heavily frequented by tourists and are safe during the day. However, opportunistic crime is common. Tourists must be cautious of muggings on isolated stretches of beach and should never walk alone at night. Keep rental cars locked and stripped of any visible items to prevent break-ins. Like the rest of the country, be prepared for 'load shedding' (scheduled power cuts) which can disable traffic lights and street illumination.
