Tourist hubs like the V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay, and Clifton are heavily patrolled by private security and are generally very safe during the day. However, tourists must be extremely cautious. Never walk anywhere at night, even for short distances; always use Uber. When hiking iconic routes like Table Mountain or Lion's Head, never hike alone or at dusk, as armed muggings on trails are a known issue. If renting a car, keep doors locked and windows rolled up at intersections to prevent 'smash-and-grab' thefts. Tourists should strictly avoid entering the Cape Flats or township areas without a highly reputable, organized tour guide.
