Mazar-i-Sharif is the commercial and cultural hub of northern Afghanistan, famous for the stunning Blue Mosque (Shrine of Hazrat Ali). Historically, it was one of the more cosmopolitan cities in the country. Today, visitors face intense scrutiny from local intelligence and security forces. There is a persistent threat of sporadic attacks by rival insurgent groups targeting both the authorities and minority communities in the northern provinces. Overland travel to and from Mazar-i-Sharif via the Salang Pass is incredibly dangerous due to poorly maintained roads, erratic driving, and the high risk of fatal avalanches or landslides during the winter and spring.
