Bamiyan, famous for the destroyed Buddha statues and Band-e-Amir National Park, is historically one of the most peaceful and safest provinces in Afghanistan. It is a hub for the Hazara ethnic minority. While the immediate threat of terrorism is lower here than in Kabul or Kandahar, the region is still governed by the same strict national authorities, and the risk of arbitrary detention remains. The primary physical risk for tourists exploring the ruins or hiking the surrounding valleys is unexploded ordnance (UXO) and landmines left over from decades of conflict. Never walk off clearly marked paths or roads. Medical infrastructure here is extremely basic.
