Frankfurt is a major financial hub and the main transit gateway for international travelers entering Germany. Most of the city, including the restored Römerberg (Old Town), the museum district, and the shopping street Zeil, is very safe. However, tourists often experience culture shock near the Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) and the adjacent Bahnhofsviertel neighborhood. This area is the center of the city's red-light district and suffers from a highly visible, severe open drug use scene and significant homelessness. While the presence of police is heavy and tourists are rarely targeted for violent crime, the area can be deeply uncomfortable and intimidating to walk through, especially at night.
