Manaus is the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest. The city itself struggles with high crime rates, heavily influenced by drug trafficking along the river routes. Tourists should exercise strict caution, particularly in the downtown area, around the central market (Mercado Adolpho Lisboa), and near the river ports, which are hotspots for pickpockets and muggings. Do not walk around at night. Most tourists use Manaus purely as a transit point to reach eco-lodges or jungle cruises, which are very safe once out of the city. Health is a major factor: yellow fever vaccinations are highly recommended, and preventative measures against malaria and dengue fever (via strong insect repellent) are absolutely essential. The equatorial heat and humidity are oppressive year-round.
