Puerto Vallarta is widely regarded as one of the safest and most welcoming coastal destinations in Mexico. It is particularly known for being very safe for expats, families, and LGBTQ+ travelers. Tourist hubs like the Zona Romántica, the Marina, and the Malecón (boardwalk) are heavily patrolled and safe to walk around, even after dark. While violent crime against tourists is extremely low, visitors should still guard against crimes of opportunity like bag snatching on the beach or pickpocketing in crowded bars. Do not leave drinks unattended. Like much of the Mexican coast, Puerto Vallarta is susceptible to tropical storms and hurricanes during the late summer and fall.
