Odense, the birthplace of fairytale author Hans Christian Andersen, is a charming, deeply historic, and exceptionally peaceful city on the island of Funen. Crime rates are very low, making it a perfect destination for families and solo travelers. The historic city center is heavily pedestrianized and very secure. The main hazards for visitors are physical: the ancient, uneven cobblestone streets can be treacherous, especially when wet during Denmark's frequent rain showers.
